John E. Hawkins
Funeral Time: Tuesday, June 5th at 12:30PM
John E. Hawkins, 85, husband of Ollie Roberson Hawkins for 61 years died at his home June 2, 2012. Born in Lexington in 1926 to Robert and Rena Moore Hawkins, he was a graduate of Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He owned an accounting practice in Lexington for over 35 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of South Elkhorn Christian Church. He was active in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for many years, serving as Sunday school teacher, elder, moderator of the Christian Church in Kentucky, member of the General Board and Board Chairman of the Christian Church Homes of Kentucky. He was an avid golfer from his teens into his seventies. He played on the UK golf team and won the Lexington City Golf Tournament in 1957. He was a member of the Lexington Lodge #1, F. and A.M. for over 50 years. Survivors besides his wife include a brother Emmet Hawkins; two daughters, Liane (Dooley) Wagner, and Karen McGaughey; one grandson, John (Athena) McGaughey; one great grandson, Sawyer; two step granddaughters, Brandy and Sommer McGaughey; and four step great grandchildren, Cayse, Abby, Saylor, and Bella. He was preceded in death by one brother and a sister. Funeral services will be 12:30 pm Tues at South Elkhorn Christian Church 4343 Harrodsburg Rd, with Pastor Mickey Anders officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-8pm Monday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home – Harrodsburg Rd.
