Funeral Time: Friday, July 30th at 2:00PM
LUCY ELLIOTT BRYANS VANMETER: Lucy Elliott Bryans VanMeter died Monday morning, July 26, 2010, after a sudden and brief illness at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky. She was the beloved wife of Laurance Browning VanMeter and the devoted mother of Laurance Browning VanMeter, Jr., John Thomas VanMeter, Charles Edward VanMeter, and Jennie Elliott VanMeter, all of Lexington. Lucy was born on May 22, 1961, in Lexington, the daughter of Louise Elliott Fallon Bryans and the late Dr. John Thomas Bryans. She was educated at Sayre School, Lexington, class of 1979; Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, class of 1983; and the University of Kentucky College of Law, class of 1987. Lucy’s passion was her family, especially her children for whom she passed on an opportunity at a legal career, and for whom no task or service was too large or too menial. While her passion was her family, Lucy was involved in community activities and served on a number of boards: Sayre School, of which she had served as a long time trustee and also as Chairman of the Board; The Friends of Raven Run; and the Lexington Children’s Museum. In 2008, Lucy was awarded the David A. Sayre Medallion in recognition of her long and outstanding service to Sayre School. In addition, she was a lifelong member of Christ Church Episcopal, where she taught Sunday school, and a member of the Idle Hour Country Club and the Keeneland Club.
In addition to her husband, children and mother, she is survived by her sister, Louise Cochrane Bryans Lorton, and brother-in-law, Michael Anthony Lorton, nephew, John-Michael Bryans Lorton, nieces, Mary-Louise Elliott Lorton and Lucy Jelsma Lorton, uncle, Dr. Edward Hagyard Fallon and aunt, Priscilla Roberts Fallon, all of Lexington, as well as numerous cousins and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, at Christ Church Episcopal, 166 Market Street, Lexington. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, at Christ Church Episcopal. A graveside interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sayre School, 194 N. Limestone, Lexington, Kentucky 40507-1121, or to any charity of the donor’s choice. Kerr Brothers-East Main is in charge of arrangements.
