Herman K. Goodpaster
Funeral Time: Tuesday, February 10th at 12:30PM
Herman K. Goodpaster, , breeder and trainer of thorougbred horses, including White Beauty, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Saturday morning, Feb. 7, 2009. Mr. Goodpaster was a farm manager for Patchen Wilkes Farm and owner of Racers Rest Farm for many years. He was the owner and breeder of White Beauty, a horse that brought him international fame. Prior to her being registered by the Jockey Club, the classification of “white” didn’t exist for thoroughbred horses. Through DNA testing by the University of California, which was unheard of in the era of White Beauty, and Mr. Goodpaster’s diligent efforts, that was changed and the Jockey Club registered her and now still include “white” as a color. Upon his retirement, he passed on his white mares to Warren Rosenthal, owner of Patchen Wilkes Farm, where white foals are still being bred to this day. Mr. Goodpaster had many other stakes winner. Kentucky Colonel, White Beauty’s sire, was also an accomplished runner, at one time holding the record for the fastest 1 ¼ mile run on an American track. Miss Rebound was a stakes winning mare of much acclaim. Mr. Goodpaster could always be seen at Keeneland with a smile in his face, a story or two and a quick wit for all those that knew and respected him. Many fellow trainers and owners would come to him for advice on anything from running a farm to prepping for a race or just to talk about another of his favorite things, the Kentucky Wildcats. Mr. Goodpaster was also a member of the Versailles Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Goodpaster; a daughter, Betty Clem; two step-daughters, Joyce (Robert) Brock and Brenda Martin; Ten grandchildren, Jeff Walton, Michael (Angie) Clem, Kim (Trent) Jesse, Tim (Becky) Walton, Steven (Elainea) Clem, Gary “Butch” Walton, Vernon Halcomb, Katrina (Jerry) Privett, Ronnie (Lindsey) Brock and Bonnie Brock; 23 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a special friend, Mary Walsinger. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lucy Henderson Goodpaster; a daughter, Peggy Walton; a sister, Roa Mae Lansdale; two brothers, Herbert and Earl Goodpaster. Funeral services will be 12:30 pm Tuesday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home – Harrodsburg Road with Bro. Frank Layne and Bro. Ronald Harpe officiating.. Burial will follow in the Paris Cemetery. Visiation will be from 5 until 8 pm Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jeff Walton, Michael Clem, Tim Walton, Steven Clem, Gary Walton, Trent Jesse, Jerry Privett and Stan Walton. Honorary pallbearers will be his 23 great grandchildren and Curvin Smith.
