Carole Mahoney Siler
Carole Mahoney Siler died Wednesday, April 13, 2022, in Lexington, KY. She was 84. Born in Owen County, she lived in Lexington, New Haven, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. She graduated from Owen County High School, had an Associate’s Degree from Cumberland College, and a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism from American University in Washington. Carole was a contributing writer to several publications in the D.C. area before becoming a reporter and editor for The Military Times in Washington. In 1985, she covered the first salute to Vietnam veterans, which was hosted by President Lyndon Johnson’s son-in-law, Chuck Robb, and interviewed comedian Bob Hope, who was the featured speaker. She covered other news events at the White House and, as a reporter, attended an inaugural ball for President Bill Clinton. In 1993, Carole left her job as managing editor of The Navy Times and moved home to Kentucky. For eleven years, she worked for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government as an administrative officer in the Office of the Commissioner of Public Works. She is survived by a son, Steven of Tampa, Florida; a daughter, Carrie of Arcata, California; grandsons, Isaiah and Zephyr; granddaughters, Cassie and Lilly; son-in-law, Noah; and daughter-in-law, Diane. She will be buried in Highland Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, contributions to humane societies or veterans’ organizations are encouraged.
